Happier news>
I have had a long letter from Peggy and Jeff Mills, The have had a very tuff time this year. First they admit was their fault in the worst of the weather they ran out of heating oil and could not get a delivery because of the snow. Then in March Peggy had a hip replacement but because of earlier operations to the hip was a big operation but her leg has been stretched and is now the same length as the other one. She came home feeling very poorly. Her mobilty is still not good and she has been warned the leg will always be very weak. Geoff went into hospital in June for an operation and was taken back in twice, the second time they found he had MRSA plus other problems for which he had another operation. Peggy was still not well and after insistence by her Doctor the hospital did a test only to find she also had MRSA. After all this, in September, they went away to France for a short holiday in the sun and have now gone off for an 18 day cruise visiting the Western Mediterranean. They wanted to wish everyone a happy Christmas.
Ihave just heard from from Heather Mitchell. Her Brother Chris died just three months after their Mother, the cancer was much more agressive than first thought. Those of us who did a lot of caravanning in the 70's will remember Chris, he was a very popular member of the youth section. Heather is now the last remaining member of her close family our thoughts and prayers go to her and all the many friends Chris had.
A letter received from Maggie Shenton. 26th December 2011
Dear Friends, It's a sad letter I'm writing. I have sold the Motor Van to the son of Laynes best friend here in the UK. Her parents were wonderful friends to me since the first day of our daughters' walking up to primary school. We carried on the freindship (they got a caravan later - but did not rally) until they both sadly died.
My eyesight is now quite a problem. My left eye ruined by Mac Degeneration and the right eye is now developing a cataract. To add to the tale of woe I've developed really painfull arthritis in the right side of my neck - so it was becoming difficult to turn my head to the right whilst driving (which is'nt really to be recommended). So the decision to sell the van was really made for me!
I joined West Kent when I was 35'ish my first car and small 9ft van! Another 3 vans further on and then the Motor Van (which I really enjoyed driving) and so now I've reached 61 and had no choice it has been a good innings and perhaps only sensible to stop.
Over the years I have made some really long lasting friendships particularly with Janet & Pip who I still hope to see occationally.
Layne also keeps in touch from Oz with 2 or 3 friends she made at the time- sends them a Christmas card with all her news. None of them have managed to decend on her in Sydney (yet)!
I shall miss you - but the vans gone to a really good home and will be well used. His Mum is also very pleased - his friends come round, get in the van, make their drinks and stay there for quite a time, so she's happy about that and there's less TV arguments with his sisters!
Much love to you all, Maggie Shenton.
